Erin bergstrom(Photo:Submitted)Connecttweetemailmorea man named Girls Roller Skates jake, young And without a home, sat in the morning sun.He wore a soiled coat And worn tennis Shoes.Jake is tall And has a beard.He looks like my son.I told jake(Not his real name)About our Shoe Drive.Since low-Priced footwear can wear out in less than a month, he is searching for sturdy, size 13 winter boots in second-HAnd stores.Perhaps someone will donate what he needs.Jake's been on the streets, crisscrossing the country, since he was 16.He had a black eye.When jake told me he struggled with deep depression, his eyes filled with tears.He's not alone.So many people experiencing homelessness suffer from some form of mental illness.I asked: "If you could have anything in your life, what would you want? "He responded by saying he just doesn't hope anymore – he'd rather be surprised than disappointed.He shared that he is an artist.If jake hasn't yet moved on, he lives on the edge of town, sometimes sleeping in a large concrete drain pipe that is dry right now.So many adults who are homeless were abAndoned as children.They grow up not knowing the steady, loyal kind of love that good parents offer, And often don't know how to"Do life. "They may not know there are people here in Northern Colorado with the resources to help them take steps toward a better future.I told a friend about jake.She raised three sons, And immediately said,"I'll buy jake a pair of boots. "She spent $200 on the best she could find, size 13, along with two pairs of warm woolen socks – just as she would have gifted one of her sons.Jake was surprised And grateful.As i sort the donations from our annual Shoes for the holidays campaign, it's great to see pairs of Shoes And socks with the tags still on them, such as:Shiny, tiny baby Shoes;Children's light-Up Shoes And fancy, high top sneakers;And practical, yet attractive heels for women.A grAndmother of four took the children shopping And each child gladly picked out a pair of new winter boots to donate.In?the fort collins And lovelAnd school districts, the need is staggering.At least once this school year, 1, 745 school children will experience homelessness.I keep thinking about jake, the man who looks so much like my son.Jake is Somebody's son, And the woman on the next street corner begging for money is Somebody's daughter.The Shoes for the holidays Shoe-And-Sock Drive usually ends christmas day.Yet the sponsors, dr. James And Adriann Anderson, Doug And Michelle Baldwin, Cindy Corbett And myself, are extending it one more week, until New Year's Day, And we have a request.This week, please pretend that"Somebody's son" And "Somebody's daughter"Is your own. Buy them any type or size of new Shoes And socks – the nicest you can afford – And bring them to us.Working together with well-Respected, local outreaches, we'll make sure they get onto the feet of those who need them. Bartow, fla. --A bartow high school student gave his classmate a pair of shoes after noticing his broken boots.Carlos perez, a sophomore, noticed joseph brown could use a different pair of shoes.The two teens have a criminal justice class together at bartow high school. "I saw that his were falling apart.I felt bad for him so i decided to give him mine because i did not want him to get bullied or get made Cheap Air Jordan 13 GS fun of,"Said carlos perez.Perez asked their teacher if he could speak to brown in the hallway so Cheap Air Jordan 7 GS other students would not see.Perez pulled out a pair of shoes from his backpack. "I was surprised when he gave me the shoes.It just made me so happy.Nobody has ever done that for me in my life,"Said brown. "Thank you so much, you made my heart very happy,"He added. "It's the holiday season and everyone has cheer in their heart, but this is something that needs to continue throughout the year,"Said dorman. "This is a wonderful lesson in the act of kindness,"She added.Brown's mother, danielle purvis, said she is overwhelmed by the gesture. "To randomly just see another student in need and provide that need and went ahead and did it without being recorded and without letting everyone know.He did it humbly,"Said purvis.Purvis said she was waiting for payday before buying her son new shoes.She is grateful another student helped. "It was overwhelming to know that there are other kids out there, other teenagers, that are looking out for my son and making sure he's taken care of when i'm not around,"Said purvis.Perez said he plans on giving brown two more pairs of shoes. "In elementary school and in the beginning of middle school, i use to have shoes that were broke and they had holes in them.I always got made fun of.I didn't want him to get made fun,"Said perez.
